Summary

"Tales and Novels — Volume VII: Patronage [part 1]" by Maria Edgeworth, is a story that begins with a family, the Percys, watching a fierce storm wreck ships at sea. Siblings Rosamond and Godfrey, engage in lighthearted conversation, belying the grave situation unfolding before them; however, as sailors cry out, the family leaps into action to rescue the survivors, who include a pompous French diplomat named M. de Tourville. Rosamond’s caring nature shines as contrasted with Godfrey's teasing, and this rescue sets the stage for a story focused on social class, good character, and how choices in love and life can lead to different results with the introduction of unexpected male guests that trigger interpersonal dynamics, hinting at themes of ambition and moral integrity.

About the Author

Maria Edgeworth was a prolific Anglo-Irish novelist of adults' and children's literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children's literature and a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe. She held critical views on estate management, politics, and education, and corresponded with some of the leading literary and economic writers, including Sir Walter Scott and David Ricardo. During the first decade of the 19th century she was one of the most widely read novelists in Britain and Ireland. Her name today is most commonly associated with Castle Rackrent, her first novel, in which she adopted an Irish Catholic voice to narrate the dissipation and decline of a family from her own landed Anglo-Irish class.
